Karaoke Always Suffers
If it's not a karaoke host who would be run off stage at Charlie Goodnights with his "comedy," a karaoke host who fancies himself Sir Mixalot, or one that always shows up late, karaoke suffers from not being a priority. It already suffers an inaccurate image as portrayed on television and motion pictures. Believe it or not, it's not ALL tone-deaf yuppies displaying their lack of talent. At least around here, there are those who actually have some talent. On a good night the tone-deaf factor is minimized.
But you let a holiday come by or some special occasion and owners or planners for these events make karaoke their last priority. First of all, if you're going to advertise karaoke, let it be that...karaoke. If you're going to have some guy playing music who's a legend in his own mind, have at it, but advertise it as such. If you're going to have karaoke on a set night, be consistent and have it on that night.
We're entering a season I dispise where holidays come and karaoke takes a back seat. October 31st is Halloween and one venue is having a contest for the sexiest costume, etc. The advertising doesn't mention karaoke and describes the karaoke host as a "deejay." The use of that term is quite debatable as I've covered in previous blog entries.
So, here we go again. Have a ball, people, but don't expect to look around and see me and a lot of a lot of folks who enjoy singing to be there. We'll be at some other venue or taking the night off!
