Success
Often one person will pay for another's success. This Friday night in keeping with trying to widen the view of a generation that moves to the same ole drum, I pulled out a Beatle album cut for my first song, "I'm Only Sleeping." It was on the American version album "Yesterday and Today."It's a more "artsie" song than many Beatle tunes.
Last night a friend gave me his review of the performance. He thought a woman was there singing and came and made a funny face at me. Most of the crowd seemed to really like it, especially Beatle effionatos.
I kept trying to refine my friend's remarks, because he has been known to say, "Man, you can sing ANYTHING!" Now he was making comments like "You don't need to be doing THAT song."
So I began to question him. "Have you ever heard the song?"
"I told you've I've heard it."
"Well, then, did it not sound authentic?"
"It sounded just like the Beatles, but you just don't need to do that song!"
I guess my friend found a Beatle song he doesn't like, but didn't know how to say it.
My friend, Cookie, asked me, "What's the song that says 'I get by with a little help from my friends?' "
I told him, "'A Little Help From My Friends'" So we did that song as a duet. Friday was a busy night with a lot of singers and amazingly, very few tone-deaf entries. One guy who is know to "recite" the same song, he sort of talks it without a melody week after week after week, didn't do so. That was a relief. As usual, karaoke started late. It's supposed to start at ten. Tony, the host, sang the first song and I was second, but at 12:30 I asked Tony if he could give me an idea of how long it would be before the rotation repeated. He said, "It's only going to be five or six more songs."
Then he announced same over the system. I tabbed out and headed for another venue. On the way out the door, Tony said, "Sorry, Man."
I said, "Tony, don't apologize for success. It's a good thing, but I want to sing. Up the street in an hour I can do three or four songs." Off I went.
